We have recently caught up with Gem Eventing as she gave us an insight into her daily life in our brand new Tales from the Stables!
Why not read on to find out about what Gem gets up to!
Just your standard flat-out Saturday. Starting the day off with an early morning walk to get some miles in, as I am walking 100 miles in March to raise money for The Multiple Sclerosis Society, a charity close to my family. Then I hopped in the car and I was off to treat myself to a McDonalds breakfast as it happens to be on the way to the feed store because I needed to stock up on feed and bedding.
There is never any room in my boot, like any equestrian car am I right? I could probably outfit an entire livery yard with coats, jumpers, hats and footwear. You can never have enough jackets especially with the weather this winter. So, it’s always a back seat job. I feel like I have the stacking down to a tee, so it doesn’t all come flying when I brake. Feed and bedding loaded up and I’m back on the road to the yard.
First job at the yard is to grab Con and pop him in the turn out area as our fields have mostly been occupied by lakes. We have a little area that allows the horses to have a leg stretch and a roll, perfect whilst I quickly skip out. While the weather is nice, I popped out for a lovely 4 mile hack with a friend.
Con isn’t the bravest on the road, but we are lucky to have a lot of off-road hacking around us. However, most of it is currently under water so we went as far as we could before we had to turn them into sea horses and swim the rest of the way.
When we got back it was time for a spot of late lunch. Like any yard we have a tea room where a lot of tea and snacks are consumed along with chatting. After lunch and the horses have been exercised and left happily munching away, like any equestrian our muck heap is overflowing this time of year. We have a patch that has been untouched for 3 years composting into black gold, our local green fingered neighbours love our fertilizer, local poo helping to grow local veg and keeping the flowers blooming. We reuse our bedding bags so we tend to fill them up one day of the weekend ready to sell in the week.
