Top Tips For Looking After Your Jewellery
Looking after your jewellery couldn’t be easier and not only will it prolong the Jewellerys life, but it will keep it sparkling and looking like new. Whether you have a plain silver piece or a gold plated piece, here are our top tips on how to look after your jewellery.
Caring For Sterling Silver Jewellery
Plain solid sterling silver jewellery loves to be worn and with proper care will last many years.
Tarnishing occurs when silver is left out in the air, dangling on jewellery trees or left in window sills or damp bathrooms. However, when it is worn regularly it keeps itself pretty clean, just requiring a quick rub with a silver polishing cloth to maintain its shine.
Here are a few tips and hints to help keep your silver jewellery looking great.
1. Store separately in a sealed zip-lock bag when not being worn, as this reduces the oxidisation that may cause tarnish.
2. If your jewellery does get tarnished, just polish the silver with a silver cleaning cloth and it will be back to its glorious shine. The cleaning cloths that Hiho recommend are sold by us online but can also be bought from most jewellers. The cloth is impregnated with jewellers rouge and is very effective at polishing silver.
3.It’s always best to remove your jewellery before going into a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage the silver.
Caring For Two Tone Jewellery
Hiho’s two tone jewellery is made from a combination of sterling silver and tumbaga, which is an alloy of gold, copper and silver. It is very hard wearing and has a beautiful golden shine. Two tone jewellery loves to be worn and with care can still look as good as new after 15 years of daily wear.
Here are some hints and tips to keep your jewellery looking great.
1. Store separately in a sealed zip-lock bag when not being worn, as this reduces the oxidisation that may cause tarnish.
2. If your jewellery does get tarnished, just polish both the silver and the tumbaga with a silver cleaning cloth and it will be back to its glorious shine. The cleaning cloths that Hiho recommend are sold by us online but can also be bought from most jewellers. The cloth is impregnated with jewellers rouge and is very effective at polishing silver and tumbaga. If the tumbaga is tarnished, a bit of elbow grease may be required
3. It’s best to remove your jewellery before going in a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage both the tumbaga and the silver.
Caring For Gold Plated Jewellery
Gold plating is a method of depositing a layer of gold onto the surface of sterling silver through an electrochemical process. The gold plating is done here in the UK. Hiho uses 18 carat yellow and rose gold and the gold plate thickness is 2 microns. Like all gold plated items, over time this may wear off, the time being dependant on what you do and will vary for each customer.
Care should be taken when wearing and cleaning gold plated jewellery to protect the layer of gold from being scratched. If your gold plated jewellery loses its shine or gets worn, Hiho offer a re-plating service, please drop us an email or give us a call for more information on this.
Here are some top tips to help you look after your gold plated silver jewellery:
1. Put on your jewellery last to avoid corrosive substances such as perfume and make-up from damaging the gold plate.
2. To clean, gently wipe off any dirt or marks with a soft piece of lint free cotton cloth, then gently polish with a polishing cloth.
3. Store each piece separately in a soft pouch, box or zip-lock bag when not being worn.
4. It’s best to remove your jewellery before going in a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage both the plating and the silver.
Caring For Solid Gold Jewellery
Some of our Hiho designs use 9 carat solid rose gold or yellow gold. Some of Hiho’s Cherry Roller designs use solid gold beads in rose and yellow gold and some have diamonds set into the beads. The beads are stamped with either “Hiho” or an “H” denoting solid 9ct gold to differentiate between the sterling silver beads which have been 18ct gold plated. Our Exclusive Cherry Roller ring has two solid gold beads for longevity, and these are not stamped with “Hiho” or an “H”.
Here are some top tips to help you look after your solid Gold Jewellery:
1. Gold jewellery can be cleaned with a soft cloth and stored carefully to avoid it getting scratched.
2. To clean solid gold and silver jewellery, rub the silver with a silver polishing cloth and gently rub the gold with a soft cloth
3. It’s always best to remove your jewellery before going into a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage the silver.
