Today, we're chatting with Gemma, creative photographer and designer behind Finches Luxury silk scarves.
At Finches GB, a silk scarf isn't just a fashion accessory, it's your “Wearable Memory”.
Hi Gemma, please tell us a bit about yourself, what do you do, where are you from?
Although this feels like it’s been my career for a life time it hasn’t, it was always my desire to end up, in design. From school I studied to be a dental technician and this was the chosen path for many years, but I’m not a person who ever wants to stop learning and growing, so next chapter started in photography spending a lot of time in Spain and Portugal as a motor sport photographer.
When back home I was happy to be back surrounded by the equestrian world capturing many memories for clients.
What do you do in your spare time & what do you get to offline?
I’m so lucky to live in the stunning Welsh countryside surrounded by wildlife, spending as much time outdoors as possible with my husband, ponies, and our adorable dog, Betty. Betty is a sweet Newfoundland who loves lots of cuddles. Betty tags along to most events now that we attend she’s part of the team.
When I need to relax, I love to sit by the fire with a jigsaw puzzle. It’s the perfect way to clear my mind and unwind. Family and friends are super important to me, so weekends are all about spending time with them. We cook and entertain together, and I love experimenting with new recipes. Even if they don’t always turn out perfectly, I still have fun trying!
What inspired you to set up the wonderful Finches, how did it all come about?
How did you get the name Finches?
People often ask about the name ‘Finches’. I have a deep love and passion for ex-racehorses. At the age of 16, I bought my first horse, ‘Percy’. His racing name was ‘Finch’s Gem’ so you can see the connection this was a sign to me that he was meant to be. We had an incredible bond, and I cherished every moment we spent together. But sadly, Percy passed away 20 years later. It was a tearful time, and I had lost my best friend, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. He was the one horse who could make everything better, and I was so grateful to have had him in my life.
Can you tell us more about Finches and the beautiful products you sell?
What is your ultimate Hiho love (favourite piece from the Hiho collection) and why?
I’m a huge Hiho fan, but my absolute favourite is the sterling silver and 18ct gold plate cherry roller snaffle bracelet with cz starlight roller beads. It’s so comfortable and looks amazing.
Whenever I wear it, I get the most lovely comments.
And finally – what would be your one piece of advice for anyone looking to start a new business?
If you’re thinking about starting your own business, take the leap and go for it! If you have the determination and vision for your business, you can make it happen.
Starting Finches has taught me that time, focus, and the right people can turn a dream into reality.
