Taking Care of Your Hiho Jewellery
Ever wondered how to keep your Hiho in tip top condition?

Well this Sunday, we're here to give you a little guidance on just that!

We pride ourselves on designing and creating jewellery that can take you from mucking out to going out, but in order to keep up with the demands of life in the country, your jewellery needs a little TLC every now and then.

Looking after your jewellery couldn’t be easier, whether you have a plain silver piece or a gold-plated piece, here are our top tips on how to look after your jewellery.

You can find our full 'Love Your Jewellery' guide on our website.

Caring for your Solid Sterling Silver Jewellery

Plain solid sterling silver jewellery loves to be worn and with proper care will last many years.

Tarnishing occurs when silver is left out in the air, dangling on jewellery trees or left in windowsills or damp bathrooms. However, when it is worn regularly it keeps itself pretty clean, just requiring a quick rub with a silver polishing cloth to maintain its shine.

Here are a few tips to help keep your silver jewellery looking great:

💍 Store your silver pieces separately in a sealed zip-lock bag when not being worn, as this reduces the oxidisation that may cause tarnish.

💍 If your jewellery does get tarnished, just polish the silver with a silver cleaning cloth and it will be back to its glorious shine. The cleaning cloths that Hiho recommend are sold by us online but can also be bought from most jewellers. The cloth is impregnated with a unique formula to remove tarnish and give a lasting shine.

💍 It’s always best to remove your jewellery before going into a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage the silver.

Caring For Two Tone Jewellery

Hiho’s Two Tone jewellery is made from a combination of sterling silver and tumbaga, which is an alloy of gold, copper and silver. It is very hard wearing and has a beautiful golden shine. Two tone jewellery loves to be worn and with care can still look as good as new after 15 years of daily wear.

Here are some tips to keep your jewellery looking great:

💛 Store separately in a sealed zip-lock bag when not being worn, as this reduces the oxidisation that may cause tarnish.

💛 Just like your solid sterling silver jewellery, if your two tone pieces become tarnished, just polish both the silver and the tumbaga with a silver cleaning cloth and it will be back to its glorious shine.  If the tumbaga is tarnished, a bit of elbow grease may be required.

💛 It’s best to remove your jewellery before going in a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage both the tumbaga and the silver

Caring For Gold Plated Jewellery

Gold plating is a method of depositing a layer of gold onto the surface of sterling silver through an electrochemical process. We do ours here in the UK and use 18 carat yellow and rose gold with a plate thickness 2 microns.

Like all gold plated items, over time this may wear off, the time being dependant on what you do and will vary for each customer.

Care should be taken when wearing and cleaning gold plated jewellery to protect the layer of gold from being scratched. If your gold plated jewellery loses its shine or gets worn, we offer a re-plating service. If you would like to know more please pop us an email or give us a call.

Here are some top tips to help you look after your gold plated silver jewellery:

✨  When getting ready, we recommend putting your jewellery on last to avoid corrosive substances such as perfume and make-up from damaging the gold plate.

✨ To clean, gently wipe off any dirt or marks with a soft piece of lint free cotton cloth, then gently polish with a polishing cloth.

✨ Store each piece separately in a soft pouch, box or zip-lock bag when not being worn.

✨ Remove your jewellery before going in a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage both the plating and the silver.

Caring For Solid Gold Jewellery

We offer a range of Solid Gold pieces at Hiho, some of our designs use 9 carat solid rose gold or yellow gold and some of our Cherry Roller designs use solid gold beads in rose and yellow gold - some have diamonds set into the beads!

Our solid gold beads are stamped with either “Hiho” or an “H” to differentiate them from our sterling silver beads which have been 18ct gold plated. Our Exclusive Cherry Roller Ring has two solid gold beads for longevity, and these are not stamped with “Hiho” or an “H”.

Did you know it's also possible to upgrade your gold plated roller beads for solid gold beads on several of our pieces like our Cherry Roller Collection
Pop us an email, give us a call, or visit our King of the Road on our show stand to find out how.

Here are some top tips to help you look after your solid Gold Jewellery:

⭐️ Gold jewellery can be cleaned with a soft cloth and stored carefully to avoid it getting scratched.

⭐️ To clean solid gold and silver jewellery, rub the silver with a silver polishing cloth and gently rub the gold with a soft cloth.

⭐️ It’s always best to remove your jewellery before going into a swimming pool or spa as the chemicals can damage the silver.
