All About Tilly

Meet Tilly Hughes, travelling groom for Laura Collett down in Gloucestershire.

Tilly was crowned Horse & Hound’s groom of the year in 2021.

At the first veterinary inspection at the Eventing Spring Carnival at Thoresby Park last April, one of the horses was so excited to be at a party, it bucked and kicked out during trot-up and unfortunately caught and broke Tilly’s arm in the process. But she’s back in action again now!

Tilly tell us a bit about yourself, what do you do, where are you from?

I’m 23 years old, originally from Cumbria and currently working as travelling groom for Laura Collett down in Gloucestershire.

What made you want to become a groom and how did you become a groom to the amazing Laura Collett?

I got into grooming while doing an apprenticeship in 2018 with Jonty Evans. It was meant to be a gap year before university to get horses out my system but still haven’t left the horses world yet! Once I had completed my apprenticeship,  I was very lucky to get a job as a yard groom at Laura’s yard which was ten minutes down the road.

Can you tell us what a typical day on the yard and at an event looks like for you?

Days very much depend on what is happening that week, which events are on and which horses are going. We normally have around 15-20 horses on the yard and a team of 4 grooms. I do the travelling to events which can be 30 mins down the road or a full on road trip across Europe. When not competing, we all pitch in with the yard work and ride the horses, hacking them out and doing their fitness work.

How is your season as a groom going so far and is there a particular event that you are really looking forward too?

The 2023 season has been a little slow to start due to some terrible weather and a broken arm but we are full steam ahead now.

Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to be a groom?

Throw yourself into it, take every opportunity you are given to travel and learn as you never know where it will lead you.

What has been your absolute favourite moment with Laura so far?

Got to be London 52 and Laura winning Badminton 2022. Badminton is such a special event and the week just went perfectly from start to finish. Although to experience flying out and grooming at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was also a definite highlight!

What is your ultimate Hiho love (favourite piece from the Hiho collection) and why?

I love all the Hiho pieces but the rose gold Cherry roller bangle has to be one of my favourites.
