We’re based in the Somerset country side, in an old piggery where it’s not unusual to see a herd of cows or a flock of chickens charge by the window or for us to be followed through the office by a pack of dirty spaniels and a cat who thinks she is a dog! We’re often asked if we design and make things ourselves – or we just buy it at trade fairs – so here’s the lowdown on Hiho...
The story so far…
Hiho Silver bubbled forth as an idea some 20 years ago, on a Thai ferry round the islands. One of our founders, Andrew and his sister, had just spent the last two months travelling in India and Thailand and were heading to the islands to relax and to do some diving. They were sat on a sack of potatoes next to a really chatty American man named Willy and over the next few days (and several bottles of Mekong whisky, very hot tom yum soup and some beautiful dives) they made a real friend for life.
Willy had started a business selling Mexican jewellery in the US and offered them the chance to bring the idea over to the UK. They literally jumped at the chance of going on an exploratory trip to the US and Mexico and whilst over there, planned the first show which went well and paid for stock for the next show, and so, with a wallpaper table, a purple velvet cloth and a rucksack of silver, the Hiho Silver story started...
Within four years, Hiho Silver was doing two hundred retail shows a year at venues like Henley Regatta, Cartier Polo, Glorious Goodwood and Badminton Horse Trials and then fourteen years later had a number of shops in small market towns with a fabulous team of people running them. The High Street die-back in 2009/10 hit the business hard and we unfortunately had to make some really difficult decisions, in common with lots of other independent traders at that time. The revised business now consists of stores in Sherborne and Dorchester in Dorset, our King of the Road takes the show stand out to around 40 shows a year and we have an active online presence with our website, facebook page and twitter interaction.
We really do believe that the countryside revival is here and happening,,,so if you love the Countryside, we'd like to get to know you and tell you more about our business.
Customers are King
We love our customers, we live and laugh with you, delight in your stories and some of you get to know us really well and send us chocolates at Christmas (much appreciated by all!). Your feedback inspires us and we have you in mind every time we start designing or go shopping. Emma, one of our Directors, loves this phrase – “Luxury is achieved when service is intuitive and goes beyond obligation” – which she saw on the hoarding outside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London. We’ve kind of adopted it as our own mantra – and we measure whether we’re getting it right by the testimonials we get from you all.
We sell three types of product – we design and source our own collections, we work with other UK businesses who have products we think you will enjoy, like Alex Monroe, Daisy Jewellery and James Veale. Then sometimes on our travels, we see artisan jewellery makers – so we see it, like and buy it – and bring it to you. Those of you who know Hiho will know that we often only have a limited number of an item – so they are exclusive to us. However, people often don’t realise that we design our own jewellery and do our own repairs – so we’ve resolved to get better at telling you about that!
Real Silver, Real Lives, Real People
We like keeping it real – we’re quite a down-to-earth bunch and we share what we’ve got going on with you, we also love it when you tell us what you’re up to. We know that you have busy lives – and we know that when you treat yourself or someone else, it’s a special occasion. So when you phone us, you speak to our Countess of Contentment (we’ve all got funny titles), when you visit us, you see one of our Duchesses in the shops or the King of the Road at Shows – and when you shop online, we’ve personally sat down ourselves and gone through the website and tried to make the experience as easy as possible.
There! In three quick updates, we’ve covered quite a lot. The bottom line is that we’re always trying to bring you the best of what we have, wrapped up in a great shopping experience. Likewise, if we do drop the ball and make a mistake (we are only human after all!) we try and sort it as quickly and nicely as possible.
You can keep up with us on our new blog, our website, our facebook page etc – and if you’re dropping by, let us know you’re around – we try and respond to all comments and suggestions.
Don’t just take our word for it!
